Freelance dancer, teacher classical and modern, ballet master, assistant choreographer

Shirley Esseboom was born in The Hague in The Netherlands where she received her dance education at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Shirley started her dance career in 1993 when she joined Nederlands Dans Theater II.
In 1997 she moved on to join the main company, Nederlands Dans Theater I.

In 1998 she was awarded the “Encouragement Prize” for young dancers from the Stichting Dansersfonds ’79.

In 2003 she left the company to join Les Ballets de Monte Carlo where she worked with the director/choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot.

She rejoined NDT I in the following year, where she was a principle dancer. Shirley received the “Merit Award” from the Stichting Dansersfonds ’79 in 2008, and the “Golden Swan” award for her entire career in 2009.
She left NDT I in 2009 to pursue a career as a freelance artist.

During her career she created many original works with choreographers such as Jiri Kylian, Wiliam Forsyth, Mats Ek, Hans van Manen, Ohad Naharin, Paul Lightfoot/Sol Leon, Wayne McGregor, Saburo Teshigawara, Eduard Lock, Johan Inger, Nacho Duato, and others.

Since 2005 she has been a regular guest teacher in various professional companies and ballet schools, including Norwegian National Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Gothenburg Ballet, IT Danza Barcelona, Scapino Ballet, Bohemian Ballet Prague, Henny Jurriëns Stichting, Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, Codartz, Roma DAF Dance Arts Faculty, Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Barcelona.
Shirley conducts workshops and master classes, and teaches Jiri Kylian’s repertoire.
She regularly performs as a dancer in galas around the world such as Roberto Bolle and friends, Gala Young American Grand Prix, Vasiliev Gala 2010 New York and Gala of the Stars Orlando.
